The Boston Terrier originated in the United States of America. They were originally a cross-breed between the Old English Bulldog and the English White Terrier. While originally bred for fighting, they were later bred down for companionship. Boston Terriers are small, compact build; erect ears, short tail and short muzzle that should be free of wrinkles. They have a square face and weight between 10 and 25 pounds. They are generally white and black in color. Terriers bark only when necessary and enjoy being around people. If properly socialized, get along well with children, the elderly, other dogs and pets. Many Bostons cannot tolerate excessive heat and also extremely cold weather, due to the shortened muzzle, so hot or cold weather combined with demanding exercise can bring harm to a Boston Terrier. Because of the short snout, they may be prone to snoring. They can live up to 15 years or more, with an average of around 13 years.
